Too many people (accidentally) leave their life up to fate. There’s no clear direction on where their life is going. On the outside, things often appear great—with the bottom line up and to the right.
We create this version of ourselves that we think lines up with what “others” expect from us – those “others” could be our close family members, our friends, our co-workers, or even strangers on the internet.
Yet, on the inside…things are not so neat and tidy.
We might even feel like a big hot mess, hoping and praying that people don’t find out what is really going on.
We do this in personal lives and our work lives. And those lives collide every single day. So, getting them to work in harmony, in balance, is key to getting some of the basic things that we all desire as humans. Things like:
👉 Happiness
👉 Acceptance
👉 Freedom to Choose our Path
So here’s that question I promised: What if you could be a fly on the wall at your funeral?
Sit with that for just five seconds, five minutes, five days, or five years.
Write down what you hope people will say of you at your funeral.
It’s a provocative thought that will stop you in your tracks. It’s probably not something you were imagining you would be asking yourself today, while reading a LinkedIn newsletter.
The bottom line is we all strive to live a life of meaning while finding purpose in our work.
It’s up to each of us to reverse-engineer our lives with the end in mind.
Whoa….hold the phone, now. That feels big and scary and hard!
Wondering how to take the first action steps on such a tall task? Here are 2 ideas…
- Use outside perspective to clarify your personal and professional meaning. Sometimes we get stuck in our own head and our own perspective and cannot see beyond ourselves. Seek perspective from others around you or thought leaders you admire.
- Simplify your work (and life!) processes with proven frameworks that others before you have already figured out.
And remind yourself of this little secret…. Many people feel like they are living up to an expectation and feeling as though they never quite get there. You are not alone in this feeling of self-doubt. It’s normal and it is natural.
Harnessing the power of these two simple ideas will help to lift the fog, infuse meaning back into the mundane, and gain more confidence in your decisions and who you want to be in life and in your work.
